Midland Bluebird has moved to strengthen its engineering function with the creation of a new Fleet Engineer role, designed to enhance technical leadership, improve oversight and support frontline teams across the region.
Nathan Burge, who has been with McGill’s Bus Group since 2021, has been appointed to the position as part of the business’s continued investment in engineering excellence.
His journey is a standout example of progression within the industry. Starting his career as an apprentice engineer, Nathan has 15 years of hands-on experience, gaining a wide range of qualifications and knowledge while working his way through the ranks.
Since joining McGill’s, he has rapidly made his mark – first as Assistant Engineering Manager, then Engineering Standards Auditor, before stepping into a leading role in 2024 focused on Health and Safety. In that position, he played a key role in raising awareness and embedding best practice across the group.
Now, in his new role as Fleet Engineer, Nathan will provide regional leadership across engineering, ensuring consistent standards, enhanced oversight and stronger technical support for frontline teams.
Nathan said: “I’m incredibly proud to take on the role of Fleet Engineer and continue my journey with McGill’s. Having started out as an apprentice, it’s been a rewarding experience to develop my career within a business that truly invests in its people.
“This role gives me the opportunity to take a more strategic approach to fleet management. Ensuring we maintain consistent high standards across the region, while supporting our teams on the ground. I’m particularly looking forward to strengthening technical oversight, improving performance across the fleet and helping to drive innovation as the business continues to grow.
“As someone who began their career through an apprenticeship, I’m also excited to work with the team on developing our own apprenticeship programme. Creating a clear pathway for future talent is something I’m deeply passionate about, and I’m committed to helping nurture the next generation of skilled engineers.”
Neil Dryden, McGill’s Group HR, Training & Recruitment Director, added: “Our congratulations go to Nathan on his promotion. He has been a real asset to the business since joining, and it’s fantastic to see his hard work and commitment recognised.
“Nathan brings a wealth of knowledge and experience that will help strengthen our engineering function, and we have every confidence in his ability to excel in this new role.
“We are also continuing to invest in our engineering teams, with a number of opportunities available for those looking to build and progress their careers. No matter your existing skillset, we encourage people to get in touch and explore how a role at McGill’s could support their future ambitions.”
